The two men killed in a small-plane crash in southwestern Alaska were identified Tuesday as Ryan D. Hoerner of Montana and David Whisenant of Maryland.

The State Medical Examiner's Office identified the pilot as the 31-year-old Hoerner of Bigfork and the passenger as Whisenant, 38, from Sykesville, according to Alaska State Troopers.

The crash occurred Saturday about 13 miles northeast of the village of Koliganek west of Iliamna, a popular fishing and hunting area. Hoerner and Whisenant, who were on a caribou hunting trip, were the only people on board the plane. A pilot flying over the wreckage reported the crash Saturday afternoon, said trooper Jeff Laughlin in Dillingham.
